J&V Foundation & CMTANC Commissioning Project, 2012
What is a Commission?
To commission music means to pay a composer to write a particular composition for a specific purpose or event.
Why are we Commissioning?
To introduce young musicians to newly composed music of emerging or established composers and to promote the creation and performance of works influenced by the Chinese culture.
What are we Commissioning?
We are commissioning educational works (single movement, 3- 5 minutes) influenced by the Chinese culture – these could range from incorporating elements of traditional Chinese music to more abstract ideas based on Chinese culture and philosophies. The technical and conceptual difficulty of the commissioned work must be suitable for pre-college level violinists, cellists, and pianists.
Who is Eligible?
Established or emerging composers of any nationality or age.
What is the Procedure?
1. CMTANC members please recommend composers who you think would be the best candidate(s) for this project. The composer could be someone you know personally, have worked with, or have heard his/her composition in a concert. For nominating candidates, please e-mail the name of the composer and contact information (if available) to firstname.lastname@example.org by September 1st.
2. The Commission Project’s organization committee will contact the recommended composers for biography, sample works (recording and/or PDF score), and list of recent works and accomplishments. Candidates younger than 18 years of age will be asked to provide a recommendation letter from an established composer.
3. Three composers will be chosen from the members-recommended list by current CMTANC board members. The fee for each composer to complete the commission will be US $1,500.
4. The composers will be given 12 months to complete the commission and the compositions will be available for performance and usage by CMTANC members and their students.
